The outlook for nursing

Duke nursing dean and Truth leader pen op-ed urging better media in wake of Woodhull study

February 2019 - This month Nursing Outlook published a strong op-ed by Duke University nursing dean Marion Broome, RN, PhD, and Truth About Nursing director Sandy Summers, RN, MSN, MPH, calling for more accurate media representations of nursing. The op-ed cited the recent Woodhull Study Revisited, which showed that U.S. news media coverage of nursing has not improved in the 20 years after a prior study found it to be abysmal. Broome and Summers called on the media and hospitals to wake up to the expertise of nurses in modern health care--and on nurses themselves to vastly expand efforts to interest the media in their work. We thank Dr. Broome and Nursing Outlook, the official journal of the American Academy of Nursing.
