Vox's assumption about nurses

Excessive and unrealistic

Vox investigation exposes emergency department billing abuses, but also its own ignorance of nursing

May 1, 2018 – A Vox piece commendably highlights excessive emergency department charges. But the piece reflects the view that only physician “treatment” and expensive equipment have any value. Apparently, triage does not. And nurses don’t even seem to exist...

New York Times and Mashable items show range of nursing expertise

Wendy Lu’s July 2017 Well blog post on the New York Times site told how her home care nurse saved her life by inserting a new tracheostomy tube after hers became blocked. And Giancarlo Mezzofiore’s October 2017 Mashable piece explains that the U.K. cancer charity Macmillan now has a nurse working online to combat “fake news” about the disease...

A comedy of errors

Inside Amy Schumer mocks nurses

May 2018 – Recently we learned that a sketch on the May 20, 2014 episode of Inside Amy Schumer (Comedy Central) mounted an amazingly vicious and comprehensive attack on nursing. “The Nurses” was a loose parody of the syndicated daytime show The Doctors. The segment presented four female “RN” characters as lazy; abusive; socially oblivious; bone-ignorant, yet oddly confident in their knowledge; resentful of physicians, yet prone to desperate efforts to attract them sexually; and last but not least, completely flummoxed by an actual health emergency. We realize the segment aired some time ago, but it remains available online and the damage it causes is too serious to leave unaddressed...

Salt Lake Tribune items about abused Utah nurse show power of advocacy

October 31, 2017 – After nurse Alex Wubbels was forcibly detained for refusing to let a police officer draw blood from an unconscious patient, Salt Lake Tribune pieces about the incident included some strong messages about patient advocacy—and advocacy for nurses themselves...
